AFK stands for "away from keyboard" and refers to a player who is not actively participating in the match. This can happen when someone steps away from their computer, becomes disconnected, or intentionally refuses to interact with the game. When a player goes AFK, their team loses pressure across the map because the absent player cannot respond to Gank attempts, contest objectives, or maintain proper Map awareness.
An AFK player creates a significant disadvantage, especially in coordinated fights or during key moments such as defending turrets or securing neutral objectives. Even short periods of inactivity can disrupt lane control and give the enemy team opportunities to push waves, take towers, or force unfavorable engagements. Because AFK behavior negatively impacts team balance and competitive fairness, it is considered a punishable offense in League of Legends.
