To hold a lane means temporarily maintaining the minion wave so it does not crash into your turret while the original laner is absent, usually after a Recall or death. A jungler or roaming teammate steps in to last hit a few minions or lightly manage the wave, keeping it in a stable position until the laner returns. Properly holding prevents the enemy from taking free turret plates, creating a slow push, or denying a large amount of CS.
Holding is especially important during early rotations, where losing an uncontrolled wave can lead to significant experience gaps. Good players assess when to thin the wave, when to let it push naturally, and when to reset it entirely. This technique supports overall lane tempo, allowing missing teammates to re enter lane without falling behind and helping maintain healthier Lane phase development.
